[OBRA] Formalizing the Guardian Role onchain with Hats Protocol - Hats Protocol
[Strategy 5] Increase governance participation
$10k USDC
We are open to receiving a portion of the compensation in ETH or SAFE tokens (if/when the SAFE tokens become transferable).
Please note: our philosophy on fees is first and foremost aligned with our goal of creating and decentralizing Hats as a fully self-sustaining and non-extractive public utility. We envision a minimal protocol fee may be a good approach to support this in later versions.
We’re not sure what the long-term fee model looks like yet, but charging services fees with existing customers in the short term has been helping us 1) understand the level of value we are delivering, and 2) ensure partners have skin in the game while we invest large amounts of time and energy into manual implementation work.

This initiative will increase transparency of the Guardian role by providing SafeDAO with an onchain source of truth via Hats Protocol, the onchain roles protocol. Hats Protocol enables DAOs to programmatically create and manage contributor roles, responsibilities, and permissions. Through this implementation, SafeDAO will be able to formalize the Guardian role onchain, automate the granting and revocation of role-specific permissions based on desired eligibility criteria (e.g., allowlist, election results, token holdings, staking requirements, etc.), and automate the expiration of the role after a specified term limit. As a result, this initiative will save SafeDAO resources by automating time-consuming community management tasks, increase decentralization by minimizing trusted actions and disintermediating human managers, and reduce wasted motion by simplifying Guardian onboarding and offboarding.
The implementation will be conducted by Haberdasher Labs, the founding team of Hats Protocol and the Hats front-end interface, in collaboration with the SafeDAO governance team. Hats Protocol is non-upgradeable, immutable, unowned, and permissionless. The foundational tech stack (core protocol, peripheral contracts, subgraphs, and SDKs) are fully open source. The protocol has received and passed two robust, formal audits by leading security experts.
